Remembering 3 LEGENDS: Givenchy, Hawking, & Mack

SO, so sorry I haven't posted in a bit - I had a little weekend getaway (check the next post) and I've been applying to jobs (cough cough: If anyone knows of jobs based in LA in product development, marketing or brand licensing...let me know). ANYWAY

They say death happens in three; and this past week has proved it true! The fashion world lost, Hubert de Givenchy. The scientist world lots their brightest star, Stephen Hawking. The hip hop world lost a 90's rap star who help launch Diddy's label, Craig Mack.

In their honor, lets take a look back at some of the greatest works and ideas to come from each...

1. Hubert de Givenchy
A globally renowned fashion designer
(passed at the age of 91 on March 13th 2018)

Hubert de Givenchy, was a french fashion designer who founded the house of Givenchy in 1952, at the ripe age of 25 making him the youngest designer to appear on the Paris Couture scene.  Basically any dress Audrey Hepburn wore, he was behind it, including that famous Breakfast at Tiffany's LBD that lets be real we all have had a poster of on our wall at one point in life.

Audrey Hepburn was not Givenchy's only famous client, others included:

  • Jackie O & her sister Lee Radziwill - Hi Carol Radzwill on RHONY
  • Grace Kelly
  • Greta Garbo
  • Dianna Vreeland - Editor at Harpers Bazzar for almost 30 years, E.I.C of Vogue for 18 years
  • Nona Hendryx - sang the OG version of Lady Marmalade, and not to be confused with Jimi Hendrix (she was just a very distant cousin)
  • Betsey Maria Cushing Whitney- former daughter in law of President Franklin D Roosevelt
& EVEN royalty including :

  • Mona Von Bismarck - talk about the Elizabeth Taylor of her days, she had 5 husbands including Harrison Williams (among the richest men in America and the grandson of German Chancellor Otto Von Bismark (who remembers studying him in school?)
  • Countess Jacqueline De Ribes
  • Duchess of Windsor - Wallis Simpson
And for all of those who love Baby Doll dresses, LBD, and Balloon Coats you can thank Givenchy!

2. Stephen Hawking
One of the smartest (if not the most smart) scientist
(passed at the age of 76 on March 13th 2018)

I mean if Stephen Hawking is not just the definition of a genius but also motivation. Being born with Lou Gherig's disease that gradually paralyzed him and also led to lost his speech. Born in 1942, doctors said he may not make it passed the mid 1960's!!! Ironically he passed on the day Albert Einstein was born.

A few highlights of his life, mostly spent at the University of Cambridge, include: Black Holes, now known as the Hawking Radiation (I'll leave that up to you science lovers to look up) and gravitational fields left behind from star collapse. It would have been amazing to see what he could do with todays technology. He was truly a LEGEND...check this out!

I will leave you with a few of his quotes that will inspire, make you laugh, and motivate you (just like him)!

3. Craig Mack
A 90's rap star who worked with some of the greats (Notorious BIG & Diddy) and even helped put Diddy's label Bad Boy records on the map.
(passed at the age of 45 on March 12th 2018 - ironically only 3 days after Notorious B.I.G who passed March 9th 1997)

Ok so he may not be as revolutionary as Givenchy and Stephen Hawking, but Mack was a major influence in the rap world. At first I didn't really know who he was, just though he was another 90's rapper, but when googling there was a lot more to him then met the eye.

Mack was best known for his single Flava in Ya Ear in 1994. He was also in charge of putting Diddy's record label, Bad Boys (still around today) on the heat map. However, when the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) Notorious B.I.G jumped on a remix of the single, along with Busta Rhymes (one of Rhymes first solo appearances) Mack's success was overshadowed by Biggie (aka Notorious B.I.G).

As Flava in Ya Ear Remix was Biggie's breakout appearance, this led to Biggies widely successful first album Ready to Die - released a few months later in 1994 and an overshadowing of Mack's success. BUT Biggie did do Mack a "favor" and name dropped Mack on his TIMELESS hit "Big Poppa" ... "I love it when you call me Big Poppa..."

So lets take a moment of silence for Hubert De Givenchy, Stephen Hawking, and Craig Mack.

Save The Best For Last...PFW!

SO, fashion month is finally over, with the close out of the week in Paris; where top designers showed their Fall 2018 RTW collection. I posted a little of my faves on my insta (if you haven't followed me yet - do itttt- click here!

I don't even know where to start...

...lets start with Balmain- which by far was my favorite show! From handbags on drones to sequins shining bright for the kira kira app to me drooling over every piece. Oliver Rousteing KILLED it, he kept true to his style but still updated it the future of fashion.

There are no words...watch for yourself!

Saint Laurent,  Ralph&Russo, Unravel, Louis Vuitton, Off - White, Isabel Marant, Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, and Chanel, all had EPIC shows.

Check out my top 5-10 looks from each of the above shows (so hard picking a max of 10)

SAINT LAURENT
Staying true to the brand image and even hosting it in an architectural forum the public could see
LEGS FA DAYYYS

RALPH & RUSSO
So jet setter chic

UNRAVEL
is the definition of edgy streetwear meets luxury scale

LOUIS VUITTON
time periods collide

OFF WHITE
Virgil Abloh is one of my idols - he has long come out of the shadow of Kanye and has this amazing eye. He bought his parents a horse so he was inspired by that for his show as well " horse "

Elie Saab
Goes grunge

Zuhair Murad
Presentation at Opening of Dubai Store - he never disappoints

Chanel
Autumn in the park vibes - loving the puffer jackets

Honorable mentions to check out:

  • Paco Rabanne
  • Balenciaga for the hypebeasts
  • Isabel Marant

And now the ones I was beyond disappointed from...I don't want to pollute your eyes to much so lets take a look at the 5 worst pieces from each collection.

DIOR
so tragic, a hot mess of moms quilts stitched together with throwback dior bags and acid trip prints

CHLOE
Natacha Ramsay-Levi’s debut collection strayed from the hippic chic vibe of Chloe and in to more of a "hipster" horrible plethora of neutrals

COMME DES GARCONS
Was this an assignment on Project Runway?

Visit Vogue Runway to check out all the looks! Let me know your faves.

Others to note:

The Bad:
  • Giambattista Valli - not up to par with his usual stunning collections
  • Valentino - prepare for colored nun outfits and large florals, BUT the scalloping on some of the pieces are nice

Between Paris and Milan - why bother with NY and London?

90th OSCARS 2018: Fashion Break Down!

SO, lets talk about the most important part of the 90th Oscars / Academy Awards ceremony...the red carpet...duh!

Rita Moreno wore her Oscar Dress from 1962

I hate to admit it, but I've seen none of the movies nominated and none of them really strike my interest anyway- so obv after the red carpet show I was off to the Clippers game. You know what they say..."Get a girl that can do both"

Out of all the award shows (Golden Globes, SAG, and Grammy's) the stars definitely brought their A game to the Oscar red carpet...finally. Mind you, that's not to say there wasn't a few tragic pieces but definitely a lot less than any other award show this year. SO, lets break it down...

SLAY
Left to Right:
Emily Blunt in Schiaparelli couture dress
Gal Gadot in Givenchy with Tiffany & Co Necklace
Margot Robbie in custom Chanel (um Chanel like never does custom so this is even more amaze)
Mirai Nagusa in Tadashi Shoji

From Left to Right:
Greta Gerwig in Rodarte
Molly Sims in custom gown
Samara Weaving in Schiaparelli
Jane Fonda in Balmain - and of course her "me too" pin *eye roll*

WHAT DO YOU THINK
From Left To Right:
Gina
Rodriguez in Zuhair Murad - cut off the sides and then we're talking
Alison Janney in custom Reem Acra- I love the dress, but that red clutch makes it just to much red
Zoey Deutch in archival Elie Saab gown - the color just does not work for her, and the straps should have been skinnier
Nicole Kidman in Armani Prive - this dress is stunning, just not on her
Salma Hayek in Gucci - Just because it's Gucci doesn't make it an automatically best dressed - thanks for clearing that up

BRINGING SEXY BACK
In a good way (minus Patrisse Cullors) - warning here comes the political statement - don't wear sexy dresses and then say oh "me too"
From Left to Right:
Blanca Blanco in Atria Couture- if you got it flaunt it! Do your thing girl (shout out to you for wearing a red dress at the Golden Globes)
Taraji P. Henson in custom Alberta Ferretti- she had a nipplegate while presenting - but she killed it so who cares
Patrisse Cullorsok so your boobs are hanging out, but you are wearing a "times up" pin...uh ok?

TRAGIC
From Left to Right:
Whoopi Goldberg in Christian Siriano- I think someone threw up flowers on her dress (I would to if I watched the View) - this is even more sad as I LOVE Christian Siriano dresses usually
Phoebe Waller- Bridge in Vionnet- this dress washes her out and the polka dots just make it look cheap.
Maya Rudolph in Valentino - did Nuns get a makeover and are now wear red?
Beanie Feldstein in Sachin & Babi Ahluwalia - clearly didn't get the memo that this is the Oscars not prom

From Left to Right:
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton - To much silk, color blocking goes wrong, why is there a random pink bow?
Haley Bennett in Dior - where did she pick all that grass from? go put it back!
Lindsay Vonn in Jeff Kim- and just like all her ski accidents, Kim was forced to cut off the sleeves due to wardrobe malfunction - I think she is the definition of bad luck.
St Vincent in Saint Laurent- did she forget the pack of pigeons she flew into the Oscars with?

SEQUIN TRAGEDY
From Left to Right:
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior - the dress is to heavy, would have been nicer if it was tighter
Lupita N'yongo in Versace - after killing it in purple Versace at the Black Panther Premiere this dress is just a bit extra (even for the Oscars)
Sally Hawkins in Armani Prive- this is what you wear when you are nominated for best actress...UM NO!
Sandra Bullock in Louis Vuitton- Asia meets wedding table cloth

PLAYED IT SAFE
Still stunning though - minus Meryl Streep (ugh)
From Left to Right:
Jennifer Garner in Atelier Versace- Classy but a bit safe - why is she even there?
Sophia Carson- Oscar red, Oscar Safe, Oscar trying to hard
Zendaya in Giambattista Valli- I'm obsessed with Valli's dresses, but I think she could have spiced it up a bit
Meryl Streep in Dior- I mean she always wears the same thing, so over her

Let me know your thoughts! I did a few polls on my insta...so check that out too (right here)
